Naples has never suffered from a shortage of places to get seafood.
New restaurants arrive. Dining trends change. Menus get reinvented. But since 2012, Mr.Big Fish has kept doing something increasingly difficult in the restaurant business: giving people a reason to come back.
And after more than a decade, those returning customers have become as much a part of the restaurant's story as the seafood itself.
The formula isn't particularly complicated. Fresh fish. Generous portions. Consistent preparation. Good value. And perhaps most importantly, a level of service built by employees who have been there long enough to know the people walking through the door.
In a restaurant business often obsessed with what's new, Mr. Big Fish has built its success around something much harder to create: loyalty.
It Started With a Simple Idea
The restaurant business wasn't something the owner of Mr. Big Fish stumbled into. He grew up around it, and hospitality has been part of his life for as long as he can remember.
When the idea for Mr. Big Fish began taking shape, he saw an opportunity in Naples for a seafood restaurant that could deliver high-quality fish and polished service without making dinner feel overly formal.
The idea was upscale casual — serious about the food, but comfortable enough to become someone's regular neighborhood restaurant.
Even the name was intentional. “Mr. Big Fish” was supposed to be fun and memorable while immediately telling people what the restaurant was about.
More than a decade later, the fundamentals haven't changed much.

The People Behind the Plates
Fresh seafood may get someone through the door for the first time. The people taking care of them can determine whether they come back.
That's an especially important part of the Mr. Big Fish story.
Many of the restaurant's servers have been with Mr. Big Fish for between five and 14 years. In an industry known for employee turnover, that kind of longevity has given the dining room something that can't easily be recreated with décor, marketing or a new menu.
Longtime customers walk in and see longtime employees. Servers get to know regulars, remember preferences and build relationships that extend beyond a single dinner.
Those employees, the owner says, have been a huge part of Mr. Big Fish's success.
And on the other side of those relationships are customers who have shown remarkable loyalty of their own. Some have been coming back for years, returning for celebrations, dinners with family and friends, or simply because Mr. Big Fish has become one of their places in Naples.

Restaurants can advertise for customers. They can't advertise their way into having regulars.
Consistency Still Has to Start in the Kitchen
Of course, great service doesn't create more than a decade of loyalty if the kitchen doesn't deliver.
Mr. Big Fish has built its reputation around fresh seafood, generous portions and consistency, with much of the food prepared in-house and an emphasis on fresh ingredients rather than unnecessary shortcuts.
Among the dishes that have become favorites are the Butter-Bathed Haddock, Cioppino and Angry Lobster Pasta, along with crab cakes, lobster and fresh fish selections.
The philosophy isn't about constantly reinventing the restaurant. It's about executing the things customers already love and doing them consistently.
Anyone who has spent time in the restaurant business knows it isn't.
A Complete Dinner Still Matters Here
There's another part of the Mr. Big Fish formula that stands out in a dining market where the final bill can climb quickly.
Most entrées aren't presented as an à la carte starting point. They include two sides and a choice of salad, giving guests a complete dinner rather than requiring them to build one piece by piece.
It's a seemingly small distinction, but it speaks to the restaurant's larger philosophy about value.
Mr. Big Fish wants to deliver an upscale-casual seafood experience without losing the generosity and comfort that helped establish the restaurant in the first place.
For longtime customers, that combination — quality, portions, service and value — has remained remarkably consistent.
Over the years, the relationship between Mr. Big Fish and Naples has extended outside the restaurant as well.
The business has supported local charities, schools, families and community organizations when opportunities arise. It's part of an approach that comes naturally after operating in the same community for more than a decade.
Naples isn't simply the market Mr. Big Fish serves.
And when you've been serving a community since 2012, customers stop being anonymous reservations on a seating chart. You see the same families return. You watch celebrations happen. You recognize faces. Employees develop relationships with guests, and guests develop relationships with the restaurant.
That's difficult to quantify on a menu, but it may be one of the most valuable things Mr. Big Fish has built.
Why Locals Keep Coming Back
There will always be another new restaurant opening in Southwest Florida. There will always be another dining trend and another place everyone wants to try.
Mr. Big Fish isn't trying to win that race.
Instead, the restaurant has spent more than a decade focusing on the things that don't change quite as quickly: fresh seafood, generous portions, consistent cooking, fair value and taking care of people.
During the summer months, the restaurant also rolls out seasonal specials from May through September, with Monday nights particularly popular and additional specials offered Wednesday through Saturday.
But whether it's a special or a longtime menu favorite, the goal remains the same.
Keep improving. Keep the seafood fresh. Keep the experience consistent. And keep giving people a reason to come back.
After all, staying busy when you're the newest restaurant in town is one thing.
Having customers and employees who are still with you more than a decade later may say even more.
