From Serbia to Naples: Mickey & Sanja’s American Dream Is Café Seabreeze

There are restaurants that begin with a business plan.

Café Seabreeze began with a feeling.

For Miroslav “Mickey” Volic and his wife, Sanja, that feeling came during quiet walks near the Naples shoreline.

Life was busy. There were responsibilities, deadlines and the usual questions about what comes next. But walking near the water had a way of quieting all of it.

The sea breeze became symbolic of those moments—a chance to slow down, clear your head and simply enjoy where you are.

Eventually, an idea began to take shape:

What if they could create a place where other people could feel that way, too?

A place to gather. A place to connect. A place where people could slow down for a while over good food and feel genuinely welcome.

That idea eventually became Café Seabreeze.

But the journey that brought Mickey and Sanja there started long before the doors opened on Davis Boulevard.

Mickey came to the United States from Serbia many years ago in pursuit of the American Dream.

Hospitality became his career—and ultimately his passion.

Over more than 20 years in the industry, he learned the restaurant business from the inside out. More than a decade of that experience was spent right here in Naples, working at familiar downtown restaurants and bakeries including The Bevy, Bice, Bonta Bakery and Café Milano.

But while Mickey was helping create memorable experiences in other people's restaurants, he held onto a dream of his own.

Someday, he wanted to open his own place.

And when Mickey and Sanja finally had the opportunity to make that dream a reality, there was little question about where they wanted to do it.

For Mickey, owning a café here was also an opportunity to share what he had spent decades learning while becoming an even bigger part of a community he cared about.

The name is more personal than you might expect.

Before there was a restaurant, there were those walks by the water.

Mickey and Sanja found that getting away from life's noise—even briefly—had a way of bringing things back into focus.

The breeze became more than part of the scenery. It became the inspiration for what they wanted their café to represent.

Their original vision was a place that captured some of that same calm: somewhere people could gather, connect and simply be.

You can still see that idea throughout Café Seabreeze today.

It's contemporary but laid-back. European-inspired but approachable. Polished without feeling formal.

Most importantly, it's intentionally personal.

Mickey and Sanja wanted the kind of neighborhood café where people don't feel rushed—where they can meet a friend for breakfast, linger over coffee, enjoy lunch or stop in for something sweet.

Their goal is simple: people should leave happy and cared for.

Of course, atmosphere only gets you so far.

For someone who has spent more than 20 years in hospitality, what's coming out of the kitchen matters just as much.

At Café Seabreeze, everything is made from scratch using fresh ingredients, and the café says its cakes contain no preservatives or artificial colors.

For breakfast, one of the signatures is the appropriately named Rise and Shine—a fresh-baked croissant filled with scrambled eggs, mozzarella and bacon.

Lunch brings options like the CousCous Salad with blackened salmon, Grouper Sandwich, Famous BLT and a classic Cheeseburger.

And then there's the bakery case.

One item in particular connects Café Seabreeze to European tradition: Medovik, an impressive 10-layer honey cake.

It's the kind of dessert that deserves a visit of its own.

What Mickey and Sanja have created isn't meant to be a special-occasion restaurant.

In many ways, it's the opposite.

They want Café Seabreeze to become part of people's routines.

The place you stop for breakfast.

The café where someone behind the counter eventually knows what you like.

The place you meet a friend for lunch and realize you've been talking much longer than you planned.

The place you bring someone visiting from out of town because it feels local.

That's what gives a neighborhood café its personality—and it's exactly what Mickey and Sanja set out to build.

There's something particularly fitting about the Café Seabreeze story.

Mickey came to America from Serbia with a dream.

He spent more than two decades learning his craft and more than ten years working in Naples restaurants and bakeries.

Then, together with Sanja, he finally got the opportunity to create something of their own.

Not simply another restaurant.

A place influenced by Mickey's European roots, decades of hospitality experience, their love for Naples and those quiet moments near the water that inspired its name.

And now, when someone walks through the doors of Café Seabreeze, orders a fresh croissant, meets a friend for lunch or takes home a slice of Medovik, they're experiencing a small piece of the dream Mickey and Sanja spent years working toward.

For the couple behind it, that's what Café Seabreeze is really about.
