A new IKEA is officially coming to Florida—and for Southwest Florida, this one actually matters.
The company has announced plans to open a new location in Sarasota’s University Town Center area, with a projected opening in late summer 2026. It will be IKEA’s sixth Florida store, but more importantly, it will be the closest one yet for Naples and the surrounding region.
For years, getting to IKEA from Naples has meant committing to a drive—either across Alligator Alley to Miami or north to Tampa. It’s never been a quick trip, and for many, it’s turned what should be a simple shopping run into a full-day event.
This new location changes that dynamic.
But it’s not just about proximity.
The Sarasota store will follow IKEA’s newer, smaller-format concept—designed to be more efficient and less overwhelming than the traditional warehouse-style locations. The store is expected to be around 48,000 square feet, significantly smaller than a typical IKEA, with a curated selection of products, planning services for kitchens and storage, and a mix of items available for immediate pickup.
In other words, it’s built for how people shop now.
That’s a notable shift from the classic IKEA experience most people are used to.
Instead of navigating a massive showroom and pulling items from a warehouse, this model focuses more on convenience—browse, plan, and either pick up what you need or have larger items delivered.
For a region like Southwest Florida, where convenience and time matter, that approach makes sense.
There’s also a bigger picture here.
IKEA doesn’t choose locations randomly.
The decision to open in Sarasota reflects continued growth across the Gulf Coast, especially in areas like Naples, Fort Myers, and surrounding communities. As more people move into Southwest Florida, demand for major retail brands increases—and companies like IKEA are responding.
It’s another sign that the region is becoming more self-sufficient.
For Naples residents, this is part of a broader trend.
Retail, services, and infrastructure that used to require travel to larger metro areas are gradually moving closer. While Sarasota isn’t next door, it’s close enough to shift behavior—and likely reduce how often people make longer trips to places like Tampa or Miami for the same experience.
And while the Sarasota location will offer a more streamlined version of IKEA, the larger stores in Tampa and Miami aren’t going anywhere. Those will still serve as the go-to for the full showroom experience and expanded inventory.
But for most people, this new option will likely become the default.
At the end of the day, this isn’t just about furniture.
It’s about access, convenience, and the continued growth of Southwest Florida as a region that’s no longer on the outside looking in.
🧭 So Which One Would You Actually Go To?
-
Sarasota: Quick trip, efficient, most practical
-
Tampa: Full IKEA experience, bigger selection
-
Miami: Only if you’re already on that side
