A Naples woman is facing felony charges after investigators say she used a fake check to pay for breast augmentation surgery, walking away with the procedure while leaving the business holding a worthless piece of paper.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office arrested the woman Wednesday following an investigation that found she had stolen money through a fraudulent check written specifically to cover the cost of the cosmetic surgery. The exact amount of the check has not been publicly disclosed.
She faces charges of grand theft and fraud, according to CCSO. No additional details about the suspect's identity or the business she defrauded have been released.
Check fraud as a method of theft has been seeing a notable increase across Southwest Florida over the past two years, a trend law enforcement agencies have flagged as one of the more common financial crimes targeting local businesses. A fraudulent check can take days or weeks to bounce, giving the perpetrator time to receive goods or services before the business discovers the check is worthless.
The case is under investigation by CCSO.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Information sourced from the Collier County Sheriff's Office and Gulf Coast News Now.
